Coronavirus Update - 12/10/2020
Open Silver Expedition (Nottingham): October half-term 2020
Due to positive cases of COVID-19 occurring within the year group resulting in all Year 11s that attend The Fernwood School having to self-isolate, it is with regret that we are unable to deliver the Open Silver Expeditions during October half-term. The Training and Practice Expeditions fall during this self-isolation period and we are therefore unable to continue with the planned dates at this time.
We will look to arrange alternative dates in 2021 for these expeditions to take place. One possible option is during the Easter holidays. However, we are also aware of the impact on exam preparation and will not plan any definite dates until we know what is happening with GCSEs next year. Further information will be sent to all participants once the Department of Education has confirmed their plans.
Open Bronze Expedition (Nottingham): October half-term 2020
Thank you to those who attended the Training Day on 10th October 2020. Regrettably, due to the escalation in positive COVID-19 cases and the greater risk of exposure during the next few days, we have had to move the expeditions to run in Easter 2021. New dates will be Tues 13th - Thurs 15th April 2021 and Fri 16th - Sun 18th April 2021. Further information will be sent out later this week to those who attended the Training Day.
Open Gold Expeditions (October 2020)
Following the Government's update and the raising of COVID-19 Alert Level from 3 to 4, we can confirm that all our activities during October & November will continue as planned. This includes our Open Walking Expeditions running during October half-term. We will keep these under review and do reserve the right to make changes if we feel it is right to do so. All our activities are following COVID-19 safe procedures in line with our Risk Assessment, but it is also important to support young people and encourage outdoor activities in a safe and appropriate manner.
Open Expeditions running on the following dates are currently going ahead but will be reviewed after the Government's announcements this week:
Wed 21st - Sat 24th October: Open Gold Practice (Yorkshire Dales)
Wed 21st - Sun 25th October: Open Gold Qualifying (Yorkshire Dales)
Sat 24th - Wed 28th October: Open Gold Training & Practice (Peak District)
Sun 25th - Wed 28th October: Open Gold Practice (Peak District)
Mon 26th - Wed 28th October: Open Bronze Qualifying (Peak District)
School Expedition Programmes
Following the Department of Education's guidelines announced on 2nd July 2020 regarding schools reopening in September, we will be offering single day planning and training sessions, including navigation training and paddle skills training. These will be non-residential in line with the guidelines. Regrettably, the guidelines prevent us from being able to deliver any overnight residentials in 2020, and we are liaising with all schools to rearrange residential training and expeditions for 2021.
We will ensure that everyone who registered on their DofE journey in 2020 is offered the opportunity to complete their expedition, and their DofE Award, during 2021. External factors, such as exams, are being taken into consideration in planning dates so as to minimise any impact to the academic progress of participants. We have also developed a Silver Direct Entrant programme which is being offered to schools and which complies with temporary expedition changes implemented by DofE to meet the needs of those affected by the cancellation of expeditions in 2020.
We encourage all DofE participants during this time to follow the advice from DofE on how to continue your Award during this period and to complete your Volunteering, Skills and Physical sections (#DofEWithADifference).
We have received the Visit Britain's "We're Good to Go" Industry Standard.
All our events will comply with COVID-19 safe procedures. We have made changes to our Standard Operating Procedures and Risk Assessments to assess our COVID-19 risks and implement safe procedures in line with Government guidelines. Further details will be sent out with Joining Instructions issued prior to each event.
Like all those involved in delivering these activities, we have a responsibility for the health and safety of all participants, school staff and expedition leaders, and a duty to protect members of the public from our actions. We understand that this is disappointing for all those involved, but we believe that it is the right thing to do in order to help beat the spread of this virus.
Our office remains open throughout this time, and we will work proactively to support all schools, participants and our leaders through this period.
