Coronavirus Update - 14/05/2020

We continue to review and monitor the UK Government's advice regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. The Department of Education is currently advising against domestic trips (residential and non-residential) for children under 18 organised by educational settings. We are expecting updates to this advice over the next few weeks as schools take small tentative steps to reopening and will adjust our plans accordingly.

We are working closely with schools to reschedule as many DofE Training and Expeditions for the 2020 Autumn season as possible. Subject to the advice at the time, we are making plans to deliver DofE Bronze and Silver Expedition Programmes in September and October. Your school will advise on the exact dates of these activities over the next few weeks.

With regards to our DofE Gold Expedition Programmes (including our Open Gold Canoeing), we are keeping these under review with a view to be able to deliver some activities during the late summer and autumn months subject to it being safe to do so. These will depend on a number of factors, including the latest safety advice by the Department of Education, approval by schools and their senior leadership teams, agreement by participants, parents and expedition leaders to go ahead, and campsites being open and willing to accept small groups. We are also looking at what procedures would need to be in place for safe operation, including any additional PPE that may be required for all those involved on the expedition.

Like all those involved in delivering these activities, we have a responsibility for the health and safety of all participants, school staff and expedition leaders, and a duty to protect members of the public from our actions. We understand that this is disappointing for all those involved, but we believe that it is the right thing to do in order to help beat the spread of this virus.

Any expeditions that are not able to be completed in 2020 will be carried over to 2021, and we will work closely with schools and participants to ensure that everyone is able to take part and complete their expedition, and their DofE Award, at the earliest opportunity. We encourage all DofE participants during this time to follow the advice from DofE on how to continue your Award during this period and to complete your Volunteering, Skills and Physical sections (#DofEWithADifference).

Our office remains open throughout this time, and we will work proactively to support all schools, participants and our leaders through this period.
