Clothing & Footwear (Walking Expeditions)
Walking Boots & Walking Socks
Walking Boots are a compulsory item of kit for all participants on walking expeditions.
PLEASE DO NOT WEAR TRAINERS!!
Factors to consider:
Must have a padded ankle cuff which will help reduce the risk of sprained ankles or more severe injuries.
The boot must fit comfortably around the foot whilst wearing a thick walking sock, without pinching or rubbing.
Good strong, thick sole with deep tread to improve grip and reduce risk of slips and trips.
Personal choice as to whether you wear a fabric walking boot or leather walking boot.
It is advisable to keep boots clean and regularly apply wax (leather) or NikWax spray (fabric) to waterproof.
Laces must be in good condition and tied tightly to reduce risk of blisters.
Clothing
Base Layer
Underwear and T-Shirt/Top such as sports tops, football shirts etc. These should be made from synthetic fibres such as acrylic, Lycra, or merino wool. This will wick away perspiration and reduce risk of soreness. Do NOT wear cotton as this traps moisture and perspiration.
Mid-Layer
Lightweight fleece tops. These should be thin and warm, made from synthetic fibres that allows perspiration to wick away from the body. Avoid thick jumpers and hoodies which are heavy and too thick.
Activity Trousers or Leggings made from synthetic fibres and should be quick drying. Do NOT wear jeans.
Waterproof Outer Layers
Waterproof Jacket
This is vital at any time of the year! The jacket must have taped seams to avoid leaking. Make sure it is waterproof and not just showerproof. Ensure that it is fit for purpose, i.e. will keep you dry in heavy rain.
Waterproof Overtrousers
Yes you will need these! Pack-away overtrousers that should be worn during wet weather to keep your legs dry and warm.
Other Protective Clothing
Warm Hat
A warm hat is useful all year round. This can help to keep you warm at night when the temperatures drop, as well as during the day in cold or windy weather. A lot of heat is lost through the head!
Warm Gloves
Warm gloves with fingers will help keep you warm, especially in cold weather. Ideally, gloves should also be waterproof so as to keep your hands dry in wet weather.
Sun Hat
A must-have item in hot and sunny weather to protect your head and neck against sun burn and sunstroke. A baseball cap is OK, although a hat with an all-round brim is better to give all-round protection.
