Top of Rucksack
Roll Mat - Foam roll mat to help insulate you from the cold. If you have an inflatable roll mat, this might be better to try to fit this inside your rucksack to avoid puncture damage from branches.

Fuel (Gas cylinder provided as part of the Group Kit)
Main Compartment (order from bottom up)
1 single set of spare clothes (wrapped in thick polythene) for expedition.
Small Towel & Wash Kit (KEEP IT SMALL)
Small amount of toilet paper (approximately a dozen sheets) & sanitary products (if required) wrapped up in double small sandwich bags.
Torch & spare batteries
Mug, Bowl, Spoon/Spork
Rubbish Bags, T-Towel, Brillo Pads
Emergency Survival Bag (orange plastic bag)
Food (Evening Meals, Breakfasts, and other days lunches)
Group Kit (issued at the start and returned at the finish):
Stove (front of rucksack, away from your back) or
Tent (in tent bags provided with poles & pegs vertically inside)
Lower Compartment / Bottom of rucksack
Sleeping Bag & Inner Sheet Sleeping Bag
(these items MUST be wrapped up in a thick polythene waterproof bag e.g. rubble sack from supermarket/DIY store or expedition dry bag)
Held in hand
Watch (wearing on your wrist) - tell the time & measure walking speed.
Map (inside Map Case) and Compass (part of Group Kit)

Rucksack Design, Fitting and Weight
You will need a 65 litre expedition rucksack e.g. Endurance Quest etc. This must have padded shoulder straps & hip belt.
When fully packed, the weight should ideally be between 10 – 12kg (that’s 22 – 28 lb or 1.5 – 2.0 stone)!
The overall weight MUST NOT exceed ¼ of your body weight.
Ensure straps are adjusted to suit your body, with the waist belt as tight as possible so that the weight is carried on your hips.
Rucksacks to Hire
Karos Adventure do have a small number of expedition rucksacks available for participants on our expeditions to hire for just £10.00 + VAT per participant. This cost covers both the Training & all Expeditions. If you wish to hire a rucksack please contact your DofE teacher at school.
